What kind of books do you read?

For me books are important to relax and to entertain, not so much to learn something of them wink
So I read a lot of Fantasy, Lord of the Rings for exemple, or Harry Potter, the Vampire-Chronicles of Anne Rice. But also detective storys; Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple.

Sometimes I also read books about conspiracy theories and about aliens, at the moment books from Erich von Däniken. But I don't really believe in those things (but who knows?)

Cool topic. I like novels and reading but very sadly I tend to fall asleep when I read lol  So there aren't that many books out there that I actually manage to read through completely. The one book that most captivated me in recent years must be "Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. I also liked and managed to finish Sebastian Faulk's "Human Traces". I met Irish writer Hugo Hamilton in Berlin a few weeks ago - a very nice man - so I must now fulfill my promise to read his best-known novel "The Speckled People" wink

Another Harry Potter fan here! laugh

I also love Jane Eyre, The Clan of the Cave Bear (the whole series), and anything by Ann Rule (who writes true crime stories about the area where I grew up)!

The most recent book I read was The Kite Runner. Fantastic book! But so sad.

Oh, all the books I could have read if I hadn't fallen asleep!
Scarlettrose, we seem to have a similar taste. I also love to read detective stories, among my favourite authors are Margery Allingham, Anne Perry and since I've been in Oxford two years ago Veronica Stallwood whose novels play in and around this town. I generally like suspense, mystery and the fantastic. A good one I recently read was Dark Matter (Newtons Schatten) by Philip Kerr.
At the moment I'm totally into The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters by Gordon Dahlquist.

i read all the time, anything i can get my hands on.. right now i'm into paranormal books..
i also LOVE anything historic... not so much into sci-fi.. but have read them too. not much of a potter fan.. but was glad to see how it got kids into the love of a good book. I did read the first 3 of potter.. but haven't continued them. the paranormal, supernatural is where i'm at this week!!!
Nothing like curling up with a good book, when it's cold and rainy outside. One of my favorite things to do!!!

Wonderful to find this topic 8-) ! I am mostly a non-fiction reader, often wishing I could broaden my horizons smile . This topic will certainly help! Politics and history tend to be my other pastimes. Right now, I am reading The Blair Years (The Alastair Campbell Diaires), whose length can put me to sleep, and The Pirate Queen (by Susan Ronald). One to satisfy my thirst for the recent and the other for the not so recent past. Also, Atonement (by Ian McEwan), more to learn about the WWII aspects and not the love story frown , after having seen the movie! I guess I love a good historical novel too shocked !

I think the best book i have ever read - apart from anything by the Gibb's of course - has to be " Some Other Rainbow " - it was written by former Beirut hostage John McCarthy - it was the most powerful read.

Looks like a lot of good choices here :geek: !

As far as Atonement, Avalanche, the epic nature of the movie was award winning, and, certainly brought one in touch with the horror of war cry . It left me with lingering questions regarding some of the history as well as the storyline :? . So, I decided to read the book, and still couldn't come up with all I was seeking :? . The premise was depressing! It was hard for me to believe that a younger sister would wreak such havoc in the life of someone she looked up to (Cecilia)!?!

Was that your take on it too?

i love reading, just dont seem to have much time or energy to read these days, but when i do, i enjoy a wide variety, stephen king and robin cook are just 2 of my favorites, i like to go to the thrift shop-all books just 20 cents!i dont always pay attention to the author, just pick out anything that looks good. i have invested in a few books-castles,the most recent Irish Castles.and one on Irish history. so I love non fiction as well as romance. i sometimes wish Robin would write a book!

I haven't seen the movie yet, I just read the book a few years ago when it was released in Germany. My problem was not the story, but the way the truth was slapped into the reader's face in the end. I admit it was cleverly done, but I didn't enjoy the feeling it evoked. I want to be touched by a book, delighted, amused, thrilled ... but not annoyed.
I really liked the first part, it reminded me very much of The Go-Between by L.P.Hartley. This hasn't a happy ending either, but it's a pleasure to read throughout.

i almost forgot...a dear friend of mine sent me a book that arrived yesterday- Thame in old picture postcards. I love it!its a nice addition to my collection. Its a little book, postcards were used for the photos, making it very unique. it covers much of Thame, such a wonderful little town!and yes there are 2 pics of the prebendal area, the first shows the Prebendal Lodge, which im not sure if it exists or not( a question for Robin!)it says a gatehouse was built across the drive in 1923.also-it says the Prebendal house was rebuilt by successive owners, some used the stones from the origional buildings.interesting indeed. the other is a pic of the retory and chapel-which according to the book are all that remain of the Prebendal in its origional form.
the chapel was restored in 1912 and was the first Roman Catholic church in the town.
sorry , but the Prebendal is one of my favorite subjects. 8-)

Sparki, my lastest Bee Gee find was a Spirits Having Flown album in quite good shape laugh ! We'll have to keep one another posted on our findings! I think we should be proud everytime we engage in recycling what with resources dwindling  !

Avalanche, I have yet to finish the book, but the movie seems to have followed it close, but I'll get back to you after the ending wink.

Men Who Hate Women and The Women Who Love Them. About mysogenists, what made them that way, and how you can survive with one. My niece is getting married soon after a whirlwind courtship which is one of the warning signs of a mysogenist's MO and I hope I'm only a hopeless paranoid. im not sure but i think i just got a bargain on some books i bought-theres a rummage sale going on at work, and for 5$ i found ten books by Nathaniel Hawthorne.I had to ask around about the date which is in roman numerals-1931!all are in very good condition considering the age, one book is stained on the outside. so i tried to look up this set on various book stores online. they are selling what ive got for 250$ shocked im not sure i want to sell, id at least like to read them, ive read the scarlet letter, but the rest are new found treasures for me.only thing is everything matched what they described, except they said the covers were blue, or made out of blue something, mine are black, unless im not looking in the right light, or perhaps the color faded. either way im quite pleased.

That does sound like a good bargain, Sparki. Congrats! laugh

I've finished the Glass Books ... fascinating story and very likeable protagonists, I found the language a bit unrefined, though, but that may be due to the German translation I read.
In case your interested, here's an entertaining website about the Books. wink

Now I'm free to enjoy Dwina's books which Lori kindly sent me.
